Laplaigne Ducks, or Canard de Laplaigne, are a Belgian breed of ducks that are highly regarded for their delicious meat. They are known for their unique beaks, which can range from colors such as greenish. There is also a white-feathered variety of the duck that has an orange bill.
Laplaigne Ducks originated from the marshy fields bordering the Escaut River in the Tournai region of Belgium. They were typically foraged for food in the summer months and then brought into enclosures for fattening in the winter for sale.
The breeding standards for Laplaigne Ducks were established in the late 1800s by Aimable Dervol, a breeder in Ypres. There was a significant population of these ducks in the area prior to World War I.
