About Cravin ScenthoundDogs About Cravin Scenthound Dogs

Cravin Scenthounds originated from Piedmont and are a variety of the small Italian hare dog. They probably are the result of crossbreeding of Italian scenthounds, among which the “Ciaplin”, a very expert small tawny short-haired scenthound with white paws and tail end. In the past these dogs were reared by farm hunters on the Piedmont hills; together with golden or white-orange rough- haired scenthounds from Savoy, probably the Vandean “briquet”, largely present in the Piedmont Alps.

Over time, and with many crossbreeding, the Cravin Scenthounds have greatly changed and how they are used.

Cravin Scenthounds are medium small sized dogs of a robust aspect emphasized by a thick coat, but a slender built with good muscles and strong bones. They have a shy and reserved temperament. They are dynamic, enthusiastic and tireless.

Their prefered walk is a trot, while searching, which is light, energetic, easy, alternating with some short galloping. They follow sure animal traces scrupulously, they do not waste time on unsure ones; they choose an initiative, quite rapid, and conclusive action. They declare what they find with vibrant movements of the tail which hits the hips, then through a high sharp expressive voice, broken by some short or long stops when various low moans are heard. They work alone or even better in couples; when in a small group, not bigger than four, they keep their strong personality, which leads them to an independent sort of work, but they can always be present when needed.
